SMS routing groups
Assign gateways and weights without confusing SMS and Voice groups.
Direct gateway or group#
A client can select a direct SMPP gateway or an SMPP routing group. Groups keep provider membership and weighting separate from the client account. Voice uses its own groups and route records.
Configure a group#
- Open SMPP Clients → Routing groups.
- Create a clear group name, such as a transactional or test route.
- Add eligible SMPP gateways.
- Set positive weights for participating gateways.
- Save the membership, then assign the group to the intended client.
- Verify with a controlled submission and inspect the actual selected gateway in its trace.
Weights and availability#
Weights influence selection between eligible members; they are not a carrier delivery guarantee. Disabled or unavailable connections must be investigated separately. Do not assume that a name such as “backup” changes its behavior without the matching configuration.
Fallback boundaries#
Provider retries and availability operate inside the selected SMS delivery path. Changing an SMPP client's group is not an automatic switch to Voice. For an application-controlled Voice fallback, use a client configured with VOICE and its Voice group.
Change verification#
After saving, reopen the group and confirm gateway IDs and weights. Check direct-client assignments before disabling or deleting a provider. Keep the previous configuration available for rollback and compare delivery, failure and cost data over the same time window.
